The village of Benais

Benais (882 inhabitants) has been built around it's church and it's castle (12th century), and is surrounded by the A.O.C. Bourgueil wineyards and forests. Formerly called Beniacus, the village was created around 57 BC.

Forests cover the north of the village, and the wineyard is around it. In the valley, you will find some brooks, and south of the village, near the Tours-Angers road, lay some gallo-roman ruins. With all these different landscapes, Benais is a nice place to walk around in a natural environment.

The wines of Benais (appellation Bourgueil controlée), grow on a clay and limestone based ground, and thus are excellent fruity young wines. Once they have matured in the roc-caves of the region, they develop delicate aromas that will fit even the most hard to please wine-expert.

Benais is located in the Loire Valley, known for its fabulous wines and castles. During your holidays at la Sourderie, you will be able to visit such famous castles as Chenonceaux, Amboise, Cheverny, Villandry and many more, as the Clos du Lucé, the small castle in Amboise where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years. The region is also nice for biking and hiking, and you will never be far from the river Loire, the last savage river of Europe, classified as world heritage by the Unesco
